“This twin’s past is a blank…
And she might not have a future.
Waking up in a bullet-ridden car with a bag of cash and a deputy insisting she’s his ex-fiancée, Ashlee Taylor has no memory of what happened—or of Lawson Avery. But with her twin missing and someone hunting her down, she must trust him with her life. Can Lawson save her and her sister—even as Ashlee’s forgotten secrets become an inescapable trap.”

Thank you in advance to the author, Virginia
Vaughan, for providing an complimentary review copy. A positive review was not
required and all words are my own.
I am definitely used to the Harlequin Intrique
line which is classified as romantic suspense. Last year I discover the Love Inspired
Suspense line. LIS as it is commonly called, for those who may not be aware, is
more of a Christian/faith based line of romantic suspense. Some of the LIS
authors also publish with Revell, Bethany House, or Thomas Nelson’s TNZ line.
While I have another book (“Killer
Insight”) by this author, this is the first book I’ve read.
This is the first in a new series, “Cowboy
Lawmen”, and as the first book, it does work as a standalone. But, I definitely
have to get the next book in the series.
This starts off with the action and literally
does not stop until the end. It just keeps going! And, this book definitely fit
this genre of “romantic suspense” of course with more emphasis on suspense.
The characters were well-rounded and slightly
well-developed. This isn’t because the writer doesn’t take the time, but this
novel is so fast-paced it is hard to settle down and get to know the characters.
I am looking forward to seeing more of the Avery brothers and reading their
stories.
I absolutely loved this novel. Of course, I am
partially biased because it features a Texas lawman, and being from the
Dallas-Ft. Worth area – the novel’s location made this a “definitely must-read”.
Add in the idea of identical twins with one missing and the other with amnesia,
the story definitely takes hold of the reader’s attention and doesn’t stop. Add
in kidnapping, murder, and corruption – this really keeps the pages being
turned.
There is also the romance of “will they get
back together again or not”, especially with amnesia thrown in.
I’ll admit, I’m the type to read the end
usually before I read the book, so I was surprised where the author ended this.
Of course with that spoiler, I had to see how this was going to play out.
And, play out it did. This small sample of
Virginia Vaughan’s writing has me wanting to hunt down more of her novels.
After the accident, Lawson thinks that “Ashlee”
is different. She does have amnesia, so that works quite well. But, there are
some subtleties that tended to cause me to wonder as well.
Vaughan has the great reveal by halfway of
chapter seven. It isn’t until a “health issue” that confirms Lawson’s
suspicion. I thought it was just brilliant! At first I was even confused, but
it came to me.
By chapter nine, the “big baddie” is revealed
and didn’t come as too much of a shock to me. However that didn’t bother me at
all.
There were a few typos. On page 110, Ashlee’s
name was spelled Ashley; and three pages later, there was a reference to her
brothers. The exact line: “He must have sensed the need for her to get
out from under the scrutiny of her brothers because he squeezed her hand, then
quickly released it.” [Hospital
scene with Lincoln and Ashlee]. Overall it didn’t really bother the entire plot
but it did make me re-read it to make sure of what I was supposed to have read.
Overall, this was a fast-paced, heart-pounding,
never-stopping action type of read. It was definitely hard to put down, and I
couldn’t stop reading or rather didn’t want to stop reading it, but “life”
happens so obviously one has to put the book down.
While the LIS books do have bible quotes at the
beginning, and do have some “faith” themes – this one tended a bit on the
heavier side without sounding preachy in tone.
This is very much written for those who enjoy a
romantic-suspense novel with Christian/Faith themes. Fans of the author and those
who enjoy a “clean” romantic-suspense will more than likely enjoy this book as
well.
Book #2 – Texas Holiday Hideout will be
