MY REVIEW

When I saw this was touring with JustRead, and knowing how much I love Amish suspense – I had to get this from Amazon. The cover definitely sent chills up my spine and brought home the suspense element.

While I have other Amish Country Justice titles by the author, this is the first one I read. And, it won’t be the last.

This is obviously part of a series. However, not all characters will appear in the books. Some characters got introductions in previous books and/or are mentioned here:

🚓 Nicole – Amish Country Threats (book #10; June 29, 2021)

🚓 Kate – Covert Amish Investigation (book #11; September 28, 2021)

🚓 Jack – Amish Country Escape (book #12; November 30, 2021)

I actually have the middle book; but did order the other two.

That said …

I do recommend reading those books to “meet” the characters and get a sense of the relationships.

Other characters rounding this out:

🎀 Lucy Hilty – widowed Amish woman, pregnant, has an 18-month-old child. Both abducted in a major baby-selling ring. But, they’re not the only ones.

🚓 Chief Mike Spencer – Nicole’s boss

🚓 Tanner Hall – Jack’s boss

As well as other minor characters. One of those is Nicole’s partner, Sergeant Kathy Bartlett who is injured in the first chapter. While she makes it, she isn’t seen again for the remainder of the book.

As the author has a way of introducing previous characters into their own “book”, I hope to see Kathy back soon.

Getting to the heart of the story – this is unique in the fact that the two main characters, Nicole and Jack, have no Amish ties. Of course, I’d have to read their “origin” stories to verify that. But, it appears they were not Amish in the past or had ties to the Amish.

Due to the plot – this will have some potential triggers: baby-selling ring, killing of pregnant women, and the kidnapping of pregnant women. This might be disturbing to some readers.

The author doesn’t hesitate to peel out and take off with this one. Lights and sirens blaring gets this dramatic, intense, and riveting book off to a start. And, she doesn’t hesitate on the action and drama. This had a Without a Trace feel to it – though I might have been influenced by that because I was binge-watching it while reading. Though, honestly – I still feel that way.

Nicole’s partner, Kathy, is injured. And, there’s a new wrinkle – FBI Agent Jack Quinn. Due to an undercover job, it appeared he’d been unfaithful to her. Because of her mother and father’s background – Nicole called it quits on the relationship. Jack is pretty upset that Nicole bailed at the first sign of the gossip.

They have no time to dig up the past – Amish women are the perfect target for a baby-selling ring. The Amish don’t have pictures of themselves so they are hard to trace. Nicole knows one of the victims – Lucy Hilty. They recover her, but little Leah is still missing. The idea of using a forensic artist comes up, and the bishop approves of it.

The FBI and the Sutter Springs police team up to find Leah and the men behind the baby-selling ring. However, it puts Nicole and Jack in closer proximity.

But, the kidnappers aren’t done going after Lucy. And, that puts Nicole and Jack on even more precarious footing. What happens to Lucy is a reminder to Jack of what happened to his sister. [As of note – I REALLY hope that story gets more “airtime” down the road.]

A pattern emerges as Nicole and Jack track down the men responsible for Lucy’s disappearance.

The kidnappers step it up a notch – and while the incident at the police department was sinister – I had to LOVE the ingenuity of using a Keurig. I got mine in 2012 and it is still going – I’d be pretty lost without it.

The more time Nicole spends with Jack, the more the feelings rise to the surface. Of course, her own family’s past is holding her back. She’s afraid of the future though.

Even Nicole becomes a target, unwittingly bringing her and Jack closer together.

Despite outing the bad guys; it took a bit to find them, connect them, and put the entire case into focus; this was definitely a “to the last chapter” kind of read that gets somewhat concluded by the end (except the two parts I mentioned).

This was one of those “hard-to-put-down” reads. Short chapters usually do that to me. It’s one of the writing methods I enjoy. The fast pace was another bonus. Lynn didn’t lag at all. I was NOT disappointed with this.

Lynn also added in a “health issue” for Nicole – type 2 diabetes. While some take their blood sugar readings daily – some several times – the A1C is a 3-month average indicator. My mother was diagnosed when she was 60 (2011), so it was interesting to see someone like Nicole dealing with it.

There was an officer in this that I thought was too “lackadaisical” about his duties. Then with an incident with a Keurig, I was really suspicious. I have to admit – I was wrong, but I loved the trail that the author took me on.

While this is a primarily Christian read – there are only lighter tones of faith and references.

Fans of the Amish Country Justice series won’t want to miss this. I have several of the author’s books in the series so I definitely will be reading them in the future. I’ll also be on the lookout for more in this series as well.
