“Honey,”
Em said, her hand caressing his face, her touch soft and warm.
She rose
on her knees, her face nearly level with his.
His gaze
fixed on the ground. He couldn’t look at her. Embarrassment rushed through him
at breaking down in front of her. But she’d have none of it.
Gently yet
firmly, she tipped his chin up, forcing him to look at her. She cupped both his
cheeks, caressing them in soothing strokes.
He blinked
through the tears. “He was such a good man,” he said, his voice barely audible
to his own ears. “The best man I kno—knew.”
“You’re a
good man.” She brushed the tears away as fast as they fell.
He shook
his head. She wouldn’t say that if she knew what he’d done. Once he told her, she’d
never look at him the same again.
“Yes,” she
said, scooting closer so she was flush against his knees. “You are.” She
strained forward, placing a kiss on his right cheek.
He stilled
at her touch.
