My Review

Thank you in advance to the author, Cari Lynn Webb, for providing a complimentary review copy. A positive review was not required nor requested, and all words are my own.

I have to admit – any story set in Texas; and I’m immediately drawn to it. It’s like a visit to my home state. I was born and lived in the prairies and lakes region (near the DFW Metroplex), I moved away when I was four – returned 25 years later, but haven’t been there since 2005. But, any part of Texas is like home.

I got introduced to the author’s work in November 2019 with In Love By Christmas, one of her City by the Bay stories. Since then, I’ve most of her NEW releases, and have the first four (4) of the City by the Bay series on my TBR, as well her book in the series RETURN OF THE BLACKWELL BROTHERS.

To say the author is a favorite is quite the understatement, I eagerly await her novels.

That said …

This book takes us back to THREE SPRINGS, TEXAS. And, as a result, there are some returning characters:

πŸ’’ Wes & Abby (The Texas SEAL’s Surprise)

πŸ’• Paige (Trusting the Rancher with Christmas)

🀠 Sam

🀠 Carter

🀠 Josh

🀠 Caleb

🍫 Tess (Paige’s sister, Abby’s cousin Her Cowboy Wedding Date)

🀠 Ryan (Carter’s brother)

πŸ‘§πŸ» Riley (Evan’s daughter)

πŸͺ Breezy & Gayle (sisters, first seen in book #2)

Readers are introduced to:

πŸ₯Ό Grant

🐎 Kelsey

🐎 Maggie

Given some storylines and the characters carry over from the previous books, it is a good idea to read the previous three books to get to know and understand the character connections and dynamics.

Kelsey and her younger sister, Maggie, are a team on the rodeo circuit. And, as the story begins, they’re in a doctor’s office because of Kelsey being thrown from a horse.

The doctor they plan to see, Dr. Toro, isn’t available. Dr. Grant Sloan is. And, he delivers the worst news – Kelsey needs surgery and can’t compete. This completely derails the sisters’ plans as they need one more win to secure a major championship and some much needed money.

Kelsey talks her way out of it and promises to rest it and do physical therapy to compete. Grant is against it, but agrees. Kelsey wants second opinions, Grant isn’t a rodeo doctor like Dr. Toro. Though eventually, Kelsey and Maggie learn from the other doctors that not only is Grant a leading authority in his field, he is right about the injury and treatment option.

Then again, he isn’t planning on sticking around. He’s waiting for a final interview for a sports clinic in California. But, he then gets a shock – his mother is waiting for him in an exam room. He hasn’t seen her in over 20 years.

A heart surgeon, Dr. Lillian Sloan, chose her career over her five sons (Josh, Caleb, Grant, Ryan, and Carter). She’s back in Three Springs – as it eventually comes to light, she’s lonely and wants to get to know her kids. Grant isn’t having anything to do with the woman who’d abandoned him and his brothers. And, he keeps the visit from them.

If Kelsey’s physical injury isn’t enough, she and Maggie have an issue with one of the horses causing them to board at the Sloans. That brings them “into” the family. It also brings Maggie and Grant closer than they want to be.

After all, Maggie wants nothing to do with “Dr. Dry Clean”. They have the same outlook on love though – she doesn’t feel that it’s worth her attention or energy; Grant has agreed to not be involved with love. While at the same time, Kelsey ends up “tempted” by Nolan, chef at The Feisty Owl.

For Maggie, it isn’t about getting to the top, it’s about staying there. Even more so with pressure from her father.

But, the longer she’s around Grant, the more she begins to see love differently. For Grant, it’s all about his career as well as dealing with his mother’s return and her true motives.

Webb definitely creates a wonderful story about forgiveness, love, as well as what we want versus what we’re destined for. Her characters become like friends we can’t wait to see, and Three Springs is like a town we love to drop in and visit occasionally, even more so when in the first book, it seemed like the town was on its last leg.

Despite all the characters, readers are only treated to Grant and Maggie’s POV for most of the story, with a slight and minor POV from Kelsey. Readers will get a two-in-one romance story with this book: Grant/Maggie and Nolan/Kelsey.

From the third book, I noticed the treasure hunt was completely missing; and again – the wedding planner and the missing money wasn’t addressed. That’s one thing that kind of bugged me – the lack of continuity. Books #1-#3 were about the treasure hunt in addition to the romance. Then it got dropped.

Despite that, I was immediately drawn right into this and ended up reading about 90% of it in one day. What I absolutely loved was Webb’s shorter chapters. This is unusual for this line. Most Heartwarming books have long chapters. However, the short chapters made it really hard to put down for any length of time (the “one more chapter” syndrome), but also kept the story flowing and not lagging at any point.

There were a few typos – one was a punctuation issue, but another was on page 335 with Gran instead of Grant. I did pause for a moment to make sure. These didn’t hinder the flow or my enjoyment of the book and could’ve likely been passed over.

I related to Grant about his mother and his “anger” at being abandoned for her career. I haven’t seen my biological father in over 45+ years (by his choice); and I haven’t spoken to him in nearly 40 years (again, his choice). At one point, he even told my mother that he couldn’t help with child support for me because he had another family (wife and six step-children). Thus, he chose them over me. Though, I’ve already made my peace and closure with that. Still, I understood where Grant was coming from.

But, staying with Grant, I LOVED Maggie’s moniker of “Dr. Dry Clean” for him.

I also LOVED the way the Sloan family took Maggie and Kelsey in when they needed help with one of the horses, and then when their camper had an issue.

Fans of the author and those who’ve read the first three books will want to pick this one up. I’ll definitely be read the new book that comes out this fall.

As there are some unresolved plot arcs from this book (and others): the treasure hunt, Lillian’s return, along with Maggie’s father and his “business ideas” – I will definitely be reading the fifth book when it comes out this fall.

And, for those who’ve read The Rancher’s Homecoming (one of the Return of the Blackwell Brothers series books) by Anna J. Stewart; Webb (another author in that series) has a NEAT Easter egg in this book about Chance Blackwell. Readers of that series might want to read this book as well. Those books are on my TBR list as well.

As this is from the Heartwarming line, readers can expect a sweet and clean read with the romance with no bad language, and no “intimacy” except hugging and kissing.
