My Review
When it comes to a book by Turner, I put the newest or upcoming release on my TBR list as SOON as it’s announced. Admittedly, I’ve been a fan since her first book – Border Breach. And, I’ve read EVERY SINGLE book of hers so far. It looks like I’ll be reading even more after this one.
Since this is part of a series, it would benefit the reader to read:
Explosive Christmas Showdown (Crisis Rescue Team #2) (introduces Zac and Ziva)
Alaskan Avalanche Escape (K-9 Search & Rescue) (not part of the CRT series, but introduces Jayla Holt, Hazel’s sister)
While Zac, Ziva, nor Jayla are seen; the characters are mentioned by Mitchell and Hazel. Reading those books might give the reader some insight as to the characters and connections.
The cover – right off – is a bit intimidating and terrifying with the cougar on it. And, to be honest, that part of the story hits about 79% into the book. It definitely drew me to the book though.
Turner introduces readers to:
π️ Hazel (Jayla’s sister)
π Mitchell
π️ Frank Hoyt (Hazel
& Jayla’s father)
π©π» Bree (Mitchell’s
sister)
π₯ “Firebug”
Given the storyline; this will have certain triggering topics: kidnapping, arson, wildfires, suicide (Hazel & Jayla’s brother), missing children. Given certain recent events, these topics might be tough for some readers.
This begins with Hazel who knows the Rocky Mountain Firebug (Firebug) is coming close to harming her park; she’s hoping Firebug doesn’t. She’s also concerned because her 8-year-old son Jackson is with a summer camp in the mountains. He’d been reluctant to go without her, yet Hazel caved to her father’s request. And, Frank Hoyt isn’t an easy man to get along with. Yet, being a single mom, she is living with her parents.
It isn’t long until Hazel runs into Firebug, and he tells her that retribution will happen. She’s then rescued by Mitchell, one of the firefighters fighting the blaze(s).
Mitchell has his own dark past, in addition to standing Hazel up at prom. But, they won’t have time to get into their pasts – they’ve got to see that Jackson’s group is safe, and stop Firebug.
However, when they come upon where the camp is – they find two of the guides injured/dead, and the boys – including Jackson – missing. It’s clear that it was planned, and for one reason – to get Jackson to get to Hazel. Though the “why” isn’t known, nor the “who”.
Mitchell offers to help Hazel, and his boss thinks he’s shirking his firefighting duties. Yet, Hazel can’t shake the feeling that Firebug has her son. If so, she’s going to need Mitchell’s firefighting expertise, especially when more fires keep cropping up pushing them further away.
They’re both trying to fight the elements, their own pasts, Mitch is trying to find his faith again, Hazel is trying to keep her own faith, they’re trying to stay alive to find Jackson, and they’re trying to convince themselves they’re just friends – despite a strong romantic connection.
And, Firebug is taunting both of them as time ticks down and the blazes keep going.
Like I usually am with Turner’s books, I was immediately drawn right in and carried off. She held my attention until the very last page. I honestly didn’t want to put this one down. And, unlike some books in the line, this had shorter than normal chapters. That’s one thing I love – it keeps me reading a lot more than longer chapters.
Some books – even non LIS books – the baddies are known right off, and the reader watches as the main characters try to figure out who it is and why, sometimes in frustration. Turner kept me guessing up until the very end. I was honestly blown away by the reveal. I didn’t see it coming.
That’s part of why I like suspense stories – I like guessing and trying to figure it out. And, Turner had NO end of surprises either. This jumped right into the story from the first page – no lingering. Turner hits the ground running, and keeps running – even flying through the action.
While being a romantic-suspense novel, this was heavier on the suspense than romance. Then again, trying to catch an arsonist and attempting to find a group of boys doesn’t leave much room or time for romance; even a second-chance one.
Fans of the author won’t want to miss this riveting, intense, and fast-paced read.
As it is distributed by the Love Inspired Suspense line
of Harlequin, there will be some refences to faith, as well as characters being
urged to “come back to God”. This is not preachy by any means, but natural for
the line.
A fun note for fans of the author – as Turner is a fan of
buffalo plaid print – there will be a slight reference to it in the book.
