    Josh reached up, tucked her hair behind her ear. Skimmed one knuckle across her cheek. Finally

appeased his curiosity, and in the process, captured her full attention.

    He watched her breath catch—the smallest hitch. She trailed her fingers over her cheek as if

capturing his touch. Then she blinked and seemed to draw herself up before her words started

spilling out again, both vibrant and sweet. “I’ll fix this, Josh. No one else knows. Maggie

promised not to tell anyone. It’ll be fine.” She wrapped her free hand around their joined ones.

Her grip and words earnest. “We just won’t bring our relationship status up anymore. And we’ll

keep our distance from each other. It won’t look like we’re even together. That’ll work, right?”

    He quietly closed the distance between them.

    She never retreated, edged even closer, then said, “Never mind. That’s not a good plan. I don’t

like it either.”

    As for him, he very much liked that Vivian seemed less inclined to release his hand than he did

hers.

    “I’ll just go inside and tell everyone I misspoke earlier. I meant friend, not boyfriend.” Vivian

blew out a breath. Her cheeks turned a delightful pink color. “Or I’ll convince them that they

misheard me. I mean your grandpa misheard you when you told him that you’d marry me. It

happens all the time.”

    Josh squeezed her hand. “About that...”
