Excerpt

        “It’s only you and me.” Caleb followed her. “You can admit it now, Deputy.”

        “Admit what?” Lacey unrolled her pant legs and squeezed more water out of her uniform.

        Caleb lifted his cowboy hat and brushed his hand through his thick brown hair. His damp T-shirt stuck to his chest. He still wore his shorts, but he’d slipped on his cowboy boots. His wide grin suggested he’d been mastering the art of the proper cannonball at the lake all day, not roping a bull. “You can admit you had fun just now. I promise not to tell.”

        And I promise not to be charmed. By him or the diversions he lived for. The same ones she used to crave. Once upon a lifetime ago. Lacey opened her car door and glanced at him. “There’s nothing to tell. I was doing my job.”

        “Fine, Deputy Nash, welcome home,” he drawled, his eyebrows lifted. “If you change your mind and decide to start chasing fun like you used to, come and find me.”

        “I can’t,” she said simply but decisively. “I’m a mom now.”

        “Last I checked moms aren’t exempt from enjoying life,” Caleb said, amusement in his words.

        “And cowboys aren’t exempt from growing up,” she countered.

        His smile never wavered. He touched the brim of his hat and dipped his chin. “Hope to see you around, Deputy.”
