          “You can’t mean it. Let this horse have his head? Sam sputtered a laugh. “I knew staying with Ruth would be a hard thing, but I’d no idea it’d take away your desire to keep on living, Emma.”

          To his astonishment she laid her hand on his. “You’ve got it backwards, Sam. Staying with an unhappy person like your aent has given me more desire than ever to keep on living—to really live, and not spend my time mulling over the past. I want to enjoy whatever pleasant thing Gott puts in front of me at the moment.” When he looked up from their hands to her face, she smiled. “Right now what’s in front of me is a fast horse and the one fellow in the county who’s able to let him run and stop him when he’s a mind to. Let him go, Sam. Just to the end of the road. Let him run.”
