Library Treasures – Borrowed
In my last blog, I talked about the library treasures I bought as a result of returning and picking up a few items.
This is about the treasures
borrowed.
One book I had to request was one
I’d used 28 years ago for a Sociology report in 10th grade. I
remember trying to track down a research book as I was doing a report on Jack
the Ripper thanks to a MADE-FOR-TV movie I’d seen back in the mid 1980’s on
NBC.
[This is an OLD book, originally published 1988] |
[Came from Boulder City Library, which is part of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library system] |
[Summary of the book – “Jack The Ripper: The Complete Casebook”] |
My mom and I – God bless her – actually
drove to Boulder City to get this book as it was one I needed for the report.
The report was pretty darn
successful, and one of the ones I am still very proud of (and still have some
of my notes from).
This book, and another one (that I can’t even remember), earned me a 92% on the report. It was a “the class votes for the fairest grade” deal while I waited outside. The class voted for “B”. I was shocked they thought that much of it. Actually, I was AMAZED. Teacher over-ruled with the final grade – A (92%).

A little background – my interest
in “true crime” began two (2) weeks before I was born. My mother 8½ months
pregnant; watched the two-night event “Helter Skelter”. She was as far as long
as Sharon Marie Tate was when she was killed. And, while some might not
understand, others might.
Anyway …
It’s interesting to look back on
this book and think about that moment, along with two newer books to add to the
“Ripper” legacy:
“The Diary of Jack the Ripper” (1993) |
“The Five: Untold Stories of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper” (2019) |
I can’t wait to delve into these
books. Of course I’m going have to put them on a schedule to read.
I’m pretty sure than when the
weather cools down I’m going to be utilizing the library quite a bit more than
I did.
I’ve certainly missed what
treasures the library has – both to buy and to borrow.
UPDATE: I was not able to get into “The Diary of Jack the Ripper”. It just didn't work for me. With regard to “The Five: Untold Stories of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper” ... that was a slightly disappointing read (https://readingexcursions.blogspot.com/2019/09/the-five-untold-lives-of-women-killed.html).
